Students in Pune were in for a surprise when the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), in association with the Sahara Pune Warriors, organised a scheme through which students of schools and colleges from Pune were given free tickets for the Pune Warriors India game against Delhi Daredevils at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, on Sunday. As many as 1,000 tickets were set aside to be given away to students on production of a student ID card at the MCA headquarters at Bund Garden Road.
Sudhakar Shanbhag, secretary, MCA said, “The idea was a joint venture between Ajay Shirke, president of the MCA and Sahara, the franchisee owners of the Pune IPL team. We had wanted to bring the IPL to Pune, and when the cricket stadium at Gahunje village could not be completed on time, we were forced to shift the home ground, but we still kept it at the nearest possible ground which met the requirements, the DY Patil Stadium. Unfortunately, not many people have been able to afford to buy the tickets, especially students. And since we have a great fan base among students, we decided to help them out.”
