NEW DELHI: The Delhi Daredevils side is packed with pace bowlers – all kinds of them. The tall South African Morne Morkel leads the attack, and Ashok Dinda, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron are right-arm seamers while Irfan Pathan brings in left-arm swing to the table.
But this firepower is in the danger of fizzling out on home turf. It will be no surprise if a big squirm emerges on the faces of the pacers as they return to Ferozeshah Kotla for their second home game, against Deccan Chargers on Tuesday. Kotla's surface has traditionally been a graveyard for fast bowlers. Yet the pace attack, with the exception of Pathan, went through its paces at the Kotla on Monday as coach Greg Shipperd and bowling coach Eric Simons watched intently.
Yet another bare Kotla track will be dished out for the Daredevils-Deccan Chargers clash on Tuesday even though Shipperd wants some grass on the pitch. Till now, he has got them only for training sessions.
"We are still looking at the option of keeping a little bit of grass on the tracks. It might not happen tomorrow but we're not ruling out the possibility for future. It will obviously be helpful for the side if the tracks have a bit more pace and bounce in them," Shipperd said on Friday.
Delhi batsmen like Virender Sehwag, David Warner and Aaron Finch too enjoyed batting at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai against Pune Warriors as the ball came onto the willow, something which does not usually happen at the Kotla. The Daredevils, as a result, chased down a hefty target with some ease on Sunday.
Dinda and Yadav also looked impressive as the ball carried through at good pace to the wicketkeeper. "We were extremely competitive in the last match. Our pacers bowled well but we shouldn't have gifted away the 20 extra runs in the match," Shipperd felt.
Skipper Sehwag is aware of the strengths of his side but he cannot control the nature of the surface. "Our bowlers are not like Lasith Malinga. They need a little bit of assistance from the surface to succeed," Sehwag had said after the first match at Kotla, which the Daredevils lost by eight-wickets to Mumbai Indians last week.
Sehwag pointed out that Morkel, Dinda and Yadav like to hit the deck but the sluggish Kotla surface makes them easy fodder for marauding batsmen. Their wish for a grassy surface though looks some way off with the Delhi & Districts Association still on tenterhooks after the pitch debacle in the India-Sri Lanka ODI in December 2009.
Till then, the Daredevils will feel more at home away from home!
