The intense emotional outburst from cricket-crazy fans during the course of India's successful run at the ICC World Cup has made a dent on the ticket sales for the fourth edition of the Indian Premiere League. At least this is the case for the first few IPL-4 matches. Sources say only around 35% of the tickets in Chennai (hosting first IPL-4 match on Friday) were sold till Thursday morning. The sale of tickets is much lower (20% or less in Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Hyderabad) when it comes to the subsequent IPL venues, sources added. IPL-4 with 10 teams and 20% more matches compared with the last three editions kicks off at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday when the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) takes on Gautam Gambhir’s new home team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The first seven matches (out of 74) will be played in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jaipur between April 8 and 12.
Of course, the special tickets for VVIPs, corporates and sponsors have already been blocked at the seven stadiums and are deemed as sold. However, the tickets for common fans which start at R500-750 and more are still unsold, sources in IPL said. This is a first compared with the previous two occasions when the IPL was played in India. Officials associated with some of the IPL teams recall that even in South Africa (which hosted IPL-2), the majority of the tickets were sold several days before the matches.
